Children and babies can go from being active to feeling sick within minutes. When a child develops a fever, has a sore throat or is otherwise in pain, it can leave parents feeling helpless. After all, we all want our children to be healthy and happy. Caring for a sick child, and the worry that often goes with it, is not a task that most of us look forward to. It is, however, a part of life when you’re a parent.
Many of us choose an over-the-counter medication when our child is sick or running a fever. Over-the-counter (OTC) medication is very effective in reducing fever, as well as aches and pains, in almost any child. OTC medications are well-regulated, and many of them were once prescription medicines, so they work extremely well. One such product that has been developed specifically for infants is Dymadon children’s paracetamol, which is sold nationwide in pharmacies in Australia.
Advantages of Using Paracetamol
These days, many parents are worried about the effects medication such as NSAIDS and aspirin, and with good reason. Illnesses such as Reye ’s syndrome have been linked to aspirin, and many pain medications can also upset babies’ and children’s stomachs. For this reason, a lot of people are beginning to buy pain relievers such as paracetamol. Paracetamol is a medication effective in reducing fever and pain, but without the side effects of other medicine. Paracetamol works quickly, usually within 30 minutes, and its effects last up to four hours. This is especially important when a child gets sick in the middle of the night.
There is another advantage to using paracetamol – it is the only type of medication that doctors will recommend for very young infants, those up to three months in age. Most companies will recommend checking with a physician before giving any medication to a baby under six months old, but paracetamol is gentle enough even for very young infants.
Paracetamol can help not only with fever and pain, but also with the pain and discomfort associated with an earache, toothache, headaches, and inflammation caused by immunisations. Brands such as Dymadon come in a pleasant-tasting, orange-flavoured liquid, which is easier to dispense to an infant or small child. These and other brands are also colour-free, which means fewer chemicals for your child. Usually, the ones used for infants come with a small syringe to make it even easier to give the medication to the child.
What Else You Need to Know
Paracetamol is gentle on a child’s stomach, something that is important to parents. There are also several recommendations from companies that make paracetamol. They include:
- Do not give the child more than four doses in a 24-hour period;
- Do not allow the child to take the medication for more than 48 hours, unless you first consult a physician;
- Do not give the child anything except the exact recommended dosage, or the child may be harmed; and
If you accidentally give the child a higher dosage than recommended, call a poison centre immediately.
