e-cigarette

While you know what e-liquid is and what it is used for, ask yourself if you really know what ingredients are present in e-liquid. What are you putting into your body each time you vape? Is it safe? Let’s look at the ingredients and evaluate how healthy they are.

Ingredients

There are two main ingredients used in e-liquid. A variety of lesser ingredients are also used, but looking at these two ingredients first is most important.

  • PG (propylene glycol) – This chemical has been approved by the FDA for ingestion, so you can rest easy knowing it is safe for your body. Additionally, you probably already use this ingredient on a daily basis. It is used in many products for your skin and hair. It is also sometimes used as an additive in foods that you probably consume every day. This ingredient helps give you a strong throat-hit while vaping. PG has no colour or taste and is safe for your body.
  • VG (vegetable glycerine) – This ingredient is the other main component of e-liquid. It is made from vegetable oil and is used in everyday products such as sweeteners and soaps. It has a thicker consistency than PG and creates more vapour.
  • Nicotine – After the two above ingredients – which are always found in e-liquid – there are also a variety of other ingredients that can be included. You can choose to have an e-liquid with or without nicotine. Because different studies have suggested that it is somewhat dangerous for your body, you can choose e-liquid that does not contain nicotine at all.
  • Flavouring – All flavourings are created from FDA approved food additives that you use every day to flavour your food. You will see flavourings that are commonly added to coffee, popcorn, pork, soups, and many other foods. The following are some of the flavouring ingredients: acetylpyrazine, beta-ionone, dimethylpyrazine, mallic acid, and vanillin. You will not see all of these flavourings in every e-liquid, and this list is not exhaustive, so you may see other ingredients not formerly mentioned.

These ingredients are mixed in different ways to make delicious flavours of e-liquid in Australia. The ingredients involved depend on the type of flavouring you choose.

Vapour

One obvious difference between smoking and e-smoking is what is produced. Smoking cigarettes and cigars creates smoke, while e-cigarettes produce vapour. When something is heated, its properties sometimes change quality. However, even though chemicals have been found in the smoke from e-cigarettes, the amount of chemicals was much lower than that found in regular smoke. Ninety percent of the toxic chemicals found in typical cigarette smoke were not present in the smoke from e-cigarettes. The vapour from e-cigarettes was shown to be the healthier option.

In the end, e-liquid contains ingredients that you already use on a daily basis on your skin and hair, and even in the foods you eat every day. They are not dangerous for you to vape. Secondly, the vapour from e-liquids was shown to be healthier than the smoke from regular cigarettes, meaning that e-cigarettes are the healthier choice.
