Over two centuries ago in 1774, Siamese-born Nai Khanom Tom was among the thousands of detainees being held by Burmese King Hsinbyushin following the invasion of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. After several months of imprisonment and incessant torture, Khanom Tom was selected to fight against the Burmese boxing champion during the annual King’s Festival.
After performing his solemn Wai Kru ritual, Khanom Tom confidently stepped into the ring and absolutely obliterated his opponent during the bout, which ended in an embarrassing first-round knockout for the Burmese titleholder. Incensed by the humiliating defeat, King Hsinbyushin immediately sent nine more fighters into the ring one by one, with nary a break between fights. Khanom Tom put them all flat on their backs with a spine-tingling string of precise kicks, punches, and elbows, effectively squashing any hopes of vindication for the enraged King.
Following this historical butt-kicking display, King Hsinbyushin graciously granted freedom to Khanom Tom and his Siamese compatriots on March 17th, 1774, a liberation that essentially gave birth to what we now know as the combat sport of Muay Thai. As a matter of fact, the entire nation of Thailand dives into uproarious celebrations each year on March 17th to honour the patriotic efforts of Nai Khanom Tom, who has since been referred to as the Father of Muay Thai.
