Hair is often misunderstood and not treated properly. Many people mistreat their hair out of ignorance; others want their hair to look a certain way and so they sacrifice the health of their hair to do this. For example, excessive heat or chemicals on your hair can damage the hair. The actual hair itself is no longer alive but treating it poorly can damage the fibres that make up your hair. It can also damage the follicles that produce the hair. The follicles are what is normally thought of as the root of the hair. Hair is developed inside the follicles. It is dead before it emerges. So, any treatment of your hair to improve its health should begin with treating the living part of the hair.
Treating the Follicles
Treating the follicles is a two-fold activity. You can treat the actual physical follicle but you also need to improve your nutrition. Hair is made out of keratin, which is a fibrous protein that also makes up your fingernails and toenails. It makes up claws, horns, and antlers in animals as well. So, any healthy hair supplements for adults need to include protein. You don’t want to eat actual keratin because it is not digestible although your body can produce it. You simply need to ingest a wide range of healthy proteins.
Keratin and other proteins are thought of as single proteins but they’re actually more similar to a family of proteins. Keratin can be made of different blends of amino acids that can subtly and overtly change its characteristics. That’s why your fingernails and your hair have different textures; also, that’s why your fingernails are not the same as a deer’s antlers. So, a hair supplement is often needed to improve the quality of your hair even if you are eating enough protein. The blend of amino acids that you are eating and producing in your body might not be sufficient to produce the healthiest possible hair. A supplement provides rarer proteins that improve your hair.
Treating the Hair
You might need to treat the actual hair as well. The hair itself is no longer alive so there’s only so much that you can do. However, if you remove the chemicals from your hair and use only healthy products, you can improve the hair. You cannot regrow keratin or truly undo damage to your hair but you can treat it. For example, shampoos and conditioners leave chemical residues on your hair. Those residues are how you can still smell the shampoo after you wash it out. They also can dry out the hair and strip it of its natural oils.
Shampoo is designed to remove oil that your body naturally secretes into your hair. However, if you wash your hair too much, you’ll remove too much of the oil and it will dry out the hair. So, you need to use a gentler shampoo, wash less often, or use a product that replaces the moisture that you are stripping from your hair when you wash it.
