Today there are many different therapies that promise great results in terms of relaxation, strengthening your spirit, or relieving stress when dealing with the issue of osteoarthritis. Two most common and effective ones are acupuncture and hydrotherapy. Being effective separately for osteoarthritis, very often a professional hydrotherapist or acupuncturist may advise their client to try the other therapy to reach better results. Is there any connection between them and can they help curing osteoarthritis? To answer this question an investigation was held to compare effect of the therapies alone and together on the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip.

The main aim of the study held was to evaluate whether there is any therapeutic effect of acupuncture and hydrotherapy. There were two perspectives that were investigated; one tried to find if there is any effect in combination with patient education and the other one with patient education alone. The main goal for an average person reading this case-study is to understand whether he or she need to find acupuncturist or hydrotherapist to relief hip osteoarthritis problems.

To conduct the study there were chosen 45 patients aged 42-86 years, who had radiographic changes with osteoarthritis in the hip. They also had pain on load, pain related to motion, and general ache of the hip. In the study they were randomly allocated to hydrotherapy, acupuncture, both in combination with their education, or their education alone. The measures as the outcome of the study were global self-rating index, the disability rating index, and also visual analogue scale. There were several assessments done right before the intervention and directly immediately after the last treatment and 1, 3, and 6 months after the last treatment was performed.

According to the final results of the research held, all kinds of pain that was related to motion and also pain on load was easily reduced up to 3 months after last the treatment was performed in the hydrotherapy group and up to 6 months in the acupuncture group. With the help of acupuncture and hydrotherapy any possible aches during the day were significantly improved up to 3 months after the last treatment. Same aches but occurring during the night were reduced in the group attending hydrotherapy up to 3 months after the last treatment and up to 6 months after the last treatment with the acupuncture therapy. With the help of both therapy methods disability in functional activities was improved by two times up to 6 months after the last treatment. Patients and participants of the research have also been seen to improve general quality of life up to 3 months after the last treatment.
